At Chan Optometry, we understand that your first eye exam can be quite a challenge. Going into your first eye exam without any prior knowledge can be considered stressful or laborious. Still, with a little preparation, you can handle your eye exam quickly and easily.

As experts in optometry, we’ve created a handy checklist to help you complete your first eye exam with as little stress as possible. Follow our checklist for your first eye exam so that you are well prepared for your appointment.

Book an appointment
Walk in’s can get complicated as we might not be able to fit you in our busy schedule. It is good to be prepared and book an appointment in advance. Give us a call, a text, or an email! Whichever one is more convenient for you, we will be happy to schedule you an appointment to see one of our awesome doctors!

Fill out the new patient form and any additional questionnaires
This is where we get to know you, your demographics, and a little background on your history. Due to COVID-19 procedures, we will also need to ensure you are healthy and safe to examine your eyes.

Remember to bring stuff
Bring (all) your glasses and sunglasses. If you have an old eyeglass prescription from a previous optometrist, that’s extremely helpful too! Don’t forget to carry your medications, as well as any eye drops you may be using.

Be prepared to answer (and ask) questions
Got some burning (eye) questions? Write them all down as it’s inevitable that you will forget some of them. Also, be prepared for the doctor to ask you a lot of questions about your eyes, what you do, and your overall health. It gives us an overall picture of your eye and vision health.

Enjoy the exam
We want your exam to be as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. An eye exam will take you one step closer to discovering any potentially harmful eye issues and resolving them before it’s too late. Even if you have any questions after the exam, feel free to call, email, or text us, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Book your annual or bi-annual eye exam upon check-out
The Ontario Association of Optometrists recommends eye exams every one to two years, depending on the patient’s age, eye, and medical health. Talk to your doctor about whether they recommend annual or bi-annual eye exams to maintain the optimal health of your eyes.
