DR. VICK CHAN

Optometrist in Markham

After earning a Bachelor of Arts with a Concentration in Medical Sciences from the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Vick Chan received his Doctorate of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry (ICO) in Chicago.

Dr. Chan believes that optometric care must be catered to the individual needs of each patient. As such he completed specialized externships in diagnosing and managing ocular diseases including glaucoma, macular degeneration, low vision rehabilitation, diabetic retinopathy and received training in pediatric optometry. In addition, he is trained to prescribe specialized contact lenses, including multifocal and orthokeratology lenses.  Enjoying to personally try treatment options himself, he wore orthokeratology lenses for 6 years and successfully underwent laser eye surgery thereafter in 2015.

In 2010, Dr. Chan’s colleagues inducted him into the Gold Key International Optometric Honour Society, an award given to those who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service.

Dr. Chan is an active member in good standing of the Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO), College of Optometrists of Ontario (COO), the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) and the American Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopic Control (AAOMC). He is certified by the Board of Examiners of Optometry and in the use of Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents. Dr. Chan has also been accredited by the National Board of Examiners of Optometry and the Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease in the United States. He has served the optometric community as a previous Examiner for the Optometry Board of Examiners of Canada (OBEC) and since 2014 as a Clinical Examiner for the Touchstone Internationally Graduated Optometrist Evaluating Examination (IGOEE). Dr. Chan is fluent in both English and Cantonese and is working hard every day to improve his Mandarin. In his spare time, Dr. Chan spends time with his family and friends, including his two young children. He also enjoys working out, running and swimming. He is an avid fan of the Toronto sports scene, including the Maple Leafs, Raptors and Blue Jays.

DR. CHAN’S PHILOSOPHY

It is Dr. Chan’s oath as a physician to do no harm, and to treat any and all ocular disease to best of his abilities. In general, Dr. Chan strives to, with taking into account his patient’s well being and approval, provide a naturalistic treatment or regimen first before resorting to medical or therapeutic treatment alternatives. Obviously, as each case is unique, that may be subject to change. It is his belief that prevention is key to stemming future or more severe diseases.
