Our optometrists may want to assess the full vertical and horizontal range of what you are able to see peripherally. This is known as your “side vision”. The Humphrey Visual Field test is the "gold standard of care" and is useful for the detection of ocular diseases and other neurological problems. Many eye and brain disorders can cause blind spots (scotomas). For example, the optic nerve damage caused by glaucoma results in a specific visual field defect. Toxicity from certain medications may also affect the retina and result in a visual field defect. This is a subjective test that requires cooperation from the patient in order to provide useful information. The visual field test may be recommended by the optometrist in order to monitor progress and preserve vision.
